Resource Modelling
Outcome: That the dairy industry understanding its resource requirements and the impacts on natural resources as it strives towards growth in South Australia
Project Activities and Achievements:
- Report of the Resources Available in the South East and Murraylands Regions
Tarsha McGregor, Rural Solutions SA. Appendix 7
This report provides a database of the resources for the two major regions. It takes an in-depth look at the land, water and infrastructure availability at present and the issues that may arise as the industry grows. - GIS Maps of current Resources
Penny Baldock, PIRSA Spatial Unit Appendix 8
Suitability of competing landuses for Dairy Industry Development in South Australia
Best available 3 phase power data covering South Australia
Current B-double routes covering South Australia
Current dairy properties in South Australia
Rainfall in South Australia
Potential for dairy pasture in South Australia
Suitable water supply for Dairy Industry Development in South Australia
Current GIS maps have been developed that show the dairy farm distribution in SA, 3 phase power availability and double articulated vehicle access.
- GIS Mapping work for dairy industry growth in South Australia
Penny Baldock, PIRSA Spatial Unit Appendix 9
A comprehensive set of GIS maps have been developed to help identify potential growth areas for dairy. The maps start off by identifying suitable soil types for dairying, suitability of ground water, ability to compete with existing land use, pasture growing season, environmental concerns and land price. These maps are then overlayed together to determine where the land that is positive for all of these characteristics is situated. The maps show that the South East and Murraylands regions are the main areas for potential growth and development. The final map shows that there is over 40,000Ha that could potentially be used for dairy. The amount of additional land that is required to achieve the state dairy plan is ~28,000Ha. - South Australia Dairy Industry Overview
Food Industry Scorecard, Food South Australia Appendix 10
This report analyses the impact of the dairy industry food chain on the South Australian economy. It measures how the value of milk increases from the ‘paddock to the plate’. This involves looking at each stage of the food chain from production to processing and through to consumption. From this economic analysis, the following are identified: the farm gate value of production; exports; imports; inter-state trade; retail sales; and the contribution made by the food services (hospitality and tourism) sector. - Update to Strategic Plan Papers I
Steve Spencer, Ridge Partners Appendix 11
Paper I outlines some of the findings from consultation within the dairy industry which was done at the time of the preparation of the update of the SA Dairy Plan. The outcomes from the consultation help explain some of the key underlying assumptions and propositions that have been used in the SA Dairy Plan Update and the impact on the South Australian Dairy Industry. - Update to Strategic Plan Paper II
Steve Spencer, Ridge partners
Paper II explain the key underlying assumptions and propositions that have been used in the SA Dairy Plan Update and reports on the impact to each of the dairying regions. - Impact of Dairying to the South East and Murraylands Regions
Sally Schultz, PIRSA
I have reported to key stake-holders in the both the Limestone Coast and Muraylands regions on the impact of dairying in the region as the State Dairy Plan targets are achieved.
