Nutrient Analysis
Outcome: The dairy industry has an understanding of the nutrient flows and balances for a range of dairy farming systems
Project Activities and Achievements:
- Nutrient Management on Dairy Farms in South East and Murraylands of SA
Amy Williams, Rural Solutions SA Appendix 15
This discussion paper has been written to provide information on the nutrient movement and management in both the South East region and the Murraylands. The paper looks at the different farming systems and the soil and land characteristics in the two regions, the current practises used for nutrient management and the potential impact on natural resources, water, soil and the atmosphere. The paper discusses the tools and resources that are currently available to assist in management and determines what areas need to be enhanced to allow growth in the industry while maintaining nutrient balance and minimising point source pollutions and diffused pollution.
- Nitrogen Budgeting Model
Trevor Clark, Rural Solutions Appendix 16
The nitrogen budgeting model has been designed as an extension tool for the management of nutrients on farm and the safe and effective application of dairy effluent. It is an interactive CD that allows you to enter your farm data that includes farm size, cow numbers, dairy water use, fertiliser application, irrigation scheduling and effluent production. The model then determines the application rates, the area of application and the amount of winter storage required to maintain nutrient balance on your farm. The nutrient modelling CD is currently being used to extend effluent application levels and nutrient balance information to farmers through Carl Smith of the Environmental Protection Authority and through Michael O’Keefe, technical officer providing effluent guideline information.
