Summary of Processing

(excerpt from Dairy Authority Annual Report 2003/4)

 

South Australian dairy farmers supply milk to five major processors (National Foods Milk Ltd, Dairy Farmers, Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Co Ltd, Murray Goulburn Cooperative Co Ltd and De Cicco Industries Pty Ltd) and a number of small processors.

There is an increasing number of farmers being accredited to supply biodynamic milk to B-d Farms Paris Creek Pty Ltd, which produces biodynamic products.

Processors in South Australia produced market milk products, cream, flavoured milk, UHT milk, cheese, yoghurt, dairy desserts, dips, ice cream, gelati, milk concentrates, whey powder, and butter from the milk of cows, goats and sheep.

At 30 June 2004 there was 34 licensed dairy processors in South Australia.

The Dairy Authority of SA regulates production, processing and vending of dairy products. This operates via industry administered codes of practice and quality assurance programs.
