Land, Resources and Statistics
The South Australian industry produces approximately 7% of the national output of milk of the Australian dairy industry at the farmgate. In the 2004/5 season the State produced 671 million litres from 397 farms around the state. There are 110,600 milking cows in SA, producing an average of just over 6000L per cow. This is the highest per cow production of any state in Australia.
The maps below show the distribution of milk and cows across the state.

South Australia is well known for its fertile soils, mild climate and quality water making it ideal for pasture based dairy systems. The South East and Murraylands have been identified as two major areas for future dairy industry growth. For more information on water and infrastructure in these two regions see the Resource Mapping Project Report. (812Kb pdf file).
Below are the land, water and infrastructure maps for South Australia. A GIS mapping project is currently underway to pinpoint potential dairy growth areas by compiling all of these maps to find 'ideal' dairy country.
